Orchid Organizations and Resources:
Other Orchid Resources:
Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia – A great place to look up basic information and photos for orchid species. Very helpful when looking up what conditions and environment different species may need.
Kew’s World Checklist of Selected Plant Families – allows you to search for an orchid species’ currently accepted scientific name and all synonyms. The American Orchid Society follows the determination in the Kew list.
The RHS International Orchid Register – This is the official place to look up orchid hybrids. You can see if crosses have been named, see the parents of a hybrid, when the hybrid was made, and who was the originator. The search is very finicky – things like spelling and spacing must be correct, or you may not get a result. If you have trouble, try shortening the hybrid name (ex: “Sorcerer” instead of “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”) and/or leaving off Genus (ex: if you’re not sure if it’s Rlc. anymore with the name changes?).
Orchid Roots Orchid Search – this is a simpler tool to get much of the same information as the above two, but sometimes easier to use. Just type your species/hybrid/partial name into the search bar at the very top of the page. It can also show you offspring and progeny information for species and hybrids. Be aware the photos are user-submitted, and can be incorrect.
